Vrindavan

"Vrindavan, 15 km from Mathura, is another major place of pilgrimage. It is noted for its numerous temples - both old and modern. The name Vrindavan evokes the playfulness and lovable characteristics of Shri Krishna. This is the wood where he frolicked with the gopis and tenderly wooed Radha."

There are more than 5000 temples in Vrindavan, the twin city to Mathura. The sanctum sanctorum of the temples is usually a room approachable via a flight of stairs. Outside the sanctum is a porch with carved pillars. The spire of these temples is like inverted cones known as Shikhar and on the slopes of the cone are several smaller inverted cones called Shikharikas, considered to be typical of North Indian temple architecture. Some important temples in Mathura are the symbol of the artistic expression of that era.
